This week in Internet cuteness
When it comes to the Internet, there's no such thing as too cute, too much wasted time or too many cat videos. When you earn extra money online and have some well-deserved time to yourself, it can be fun to indulge in kicking back, relaxing and enjoying the world of weirdness that the Web has to offer. For those who love to watch viral content but don't love the often manic search it takes to find it, here are some of the coolest things that are impressing the Internet this week.
Celebrity ice bucket videos
By now, it seems like everyone on the planet knows what the ALS ice bucket challenge is - in an effort to raise money for rare disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (popularly known as Lou Gehrig's disease), thousands have been dumping ice water over their heads and donating to the cause. The efforts of the ALS Foundation have certainly gone viral over the past handful of weeks, and have spread to some of the most powerful and popular people in the country. In the past week alone, here are a few celebrities who have put their own unique twist on the challenge:
- Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters enacted the challenge while spoofing the iconic scene in "Carrie" that depicts the title character having blood dumped on her head, according to Spin Magazine.
- Charlie Sheen, noted actor and the inventor of the expression "tiger blood," used the opportunity to nominated his former "Two and a Half Men" co-stars after a decidedly ungraceful exit from the program several years ago.
- Lady Gaga dressed up in her usual crazy attire to raise awareness and donated quite a bit of money to the ALS Foundation.
- Chris Pratt, star of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Parks and Recreation," reinvented the challenge for his own purposes, choosing instead to drink a nip of "Ice" vodka. A little tricky, but he donated money!
Though some consider the ice bucket trend a passing fad, there's no greater thing to hit the mainstream than activism.
New pop music explodes onto the scene
Two of the reigning ladies of popular music released new, provocative music videos this week with wildly different themes. After a summer devoid of any real top charters to define the season the way Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" did in 2013, fans were likely thrilled to see former country teen queen turned pop princess Taylor Swift and hip hop chart topper Nicki Minaj release singles within a day of each other.
According to a recent post from Rolling Stone blogger Steve Knopper, Swift's single "Shake It Off" and Minaj's "Anaconda" will likely be in stiff competition for the coveted No. 1 slot on the Billboard chart. The two stars are reportedly good friends, and will likely enjoy milking the controversy.
When you earn extra money online by taking paid surveys, it's fun to consume a little pop culture to take the edge off day-to-day stresses. Indulge a little with extra cash here and there and make the most of your free time!
