Important sun safety tips for anyone heading outdoors this summer

Whether you're headed to the beach or just playing a little summer baseball, making sure you keep yourself protected from harmful UV rays is important for preventing heat exhaustion or the development of a more serious condition.

By taking paid surveys with Opinion Outpost, you can make money from home online to pay for sun safety essentials, from the best sunscreen to a new hat or beach umbrella. Here are a few ideas for making sure you keep yourself protected from the sun this summer.

Choose the right sunblock
The Environmental Working Group found that protecting yourself in the summer starts with a good sunscreen. Some brands may mislead customers with inflated SPF labels or claims about fortified vitamins. EWG stated that these can trick some folks into selecting a sunblock that doesn't provide adequate coverage or otherwise cause them to fail to reapply the product often enough.

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB  rays. Select the proper SPF based on your skin type and how long you will be outdoors, and be sure to reapply accordingly. Interestingly enough, EWG reported that men are much less likely to be cognizant of the importance of sunscreen, so be sure to give your dad or grandfather gentle reminders.

Wear the right gear
Beyond sunscreen, there are plenty of other important steps to take to stay safe this summer. Not only can prolonged sun exposure lead to skin cancer and other disorders, but it may also exacerbate dehydration or result in heat exhaustion. For that reason, keeping yourself cool and out of the sun is critical.

According to the Sun Safety Alliance, choosing the right clothes is a good place to start. Dark, tightly-woven clothes will help keep your body protected from the sun, while wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses will help ensure that your face and sensitive eyes are also safe. These items are especially important at the beach or pool where shade is in short supply.

Pay close attention
Above all else, sun protection means making informed decisions about how much time you spend outdoors. You may bring your hat and sunscreen to the beach, but knowing when to give your body a break from the sun's harmful rays is essential.

For that reason bring along a beach umbrella when heading to the shore. For younger children, make sure they come inside every half hour or so and cool down.
