Can you guess 2015's top-selling DVD?
With the cold weather settling in, winter is an excellent time to stock up on the latest movies. Some awesome films were released in 2015, and Americans are so eager to revisit their favorite movies that millions of dollars have been spent on DVDs and Blu-rays.
Taking a few paid surveys is a great way to make money from home, and because Opinion Outpost members can also earn gift cards to websites like Amazon*, purchasing great movies has never been easier. Here were the most sought-after films in 2015.
5. "The Avengers: Age of Ultron"
It would seem that folks just can't get enough superhero movies, and the latest Avengers film earned hundreds of millions of dollars in the box office when it was released in the spring of 2015. In fact, Forbes reported that the film earned at least $1.25 billion dollars across theaters worldwide.
According to The Numbers, however, the on-screen success hasn't translated to DVD and Blu-ray sales. "Age of Ultron" beat out other action flicks like "Mad Max" and "Interstellar," but barely cracked the top 5, narrowly passing "Fifty Shades of Grey" by just a few thousand sales.
4. "American Sniper"
While most films in The Numbers' list are generally family-friendly, Clint Eastwood's Oscar-winning film is an exception.
A biography of the most decorated sniper in American history, Bradley Cooper put on a performance that earned the film a nod for Best Actor. "American Sniper" was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing and Sound Mixing. The Independent Journal reported that the film won the Academy Award for Sound Editing.
"American Sniper" was also successful when it came to DVD and Blu-ray sales, earning just under $60 million.
3. "Jurassic World"
"Jurassic World" stunned Hollywood this summer when it took in over $1.5 billion in worldwide sales. According to Hollywood Reporter, "Jurassic World" is the third most successful film of all time behind "Avatar" and "Titanic" when adjusted for inflation.
The film stars Chris Pratt, who must save thousands of tourists from a genetically modified cloned dinosaur. Variety initially reported that "Jurassic World" saw stellar DVD sales when it was first available for purchase this fall. According to The Numbers, the momentum waned, though the film still made $76 million in home media products.
2. "The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay - Part 1"
This past year, the public saw a number of popular franchises role out new films, although this one was actually released in November of 2014. That means that "Mocking Jay - Part 1" has had all year to earn DVD and Blu-ray sales, and likely earned a boost when "Mocking Jay - Part 2" was released in late 2015.
Regardless, the $66.5 million that "Mocking Jay" earned in home box office sales wasn't enough to trump the top video purchase of 2015.
1. Big Hero 6
Disney's loveable animated film about an unlikely but loveable alien protagonist took in a whopping $91 million in DVD and Blu-ray sales. "Big Hero 6" also sold more than a million more units than "Mocking Jay," and, according to Forbes, posted record numbers in China.
The film was released in late 2014, and has stayed relevant in 2015 with big home media sales.
